It is with heavy heart that we report that the legendary David Bowie has passed away at the age of 69.
David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.
Bowie’s music career launched him into stardom in 1969 when his single “Space Oddity” topped the UK charts. His career blossomed, and Bowie branched out beyond music into acting. He became a true icon and sex symbol for the next four decades. His latest album Blackstar released on January 8, just two days before his death.
But to those of us in nerd culture, Bowie’s life had another meaning. Among many of his acting roles, albums, and cameos, there was one that stands out: Jareth the Goblin King. Labyrinth is a film that we embraced as children and turn to for comfort as adults. It was imaginative, fantastical; and Bowie was so enchanting that Jareth himself became a cultural icon. He may not have had power over Sarah, but he had power over the rest of us.
We will definitely reflect more upon Bowie’s life and his impact on ours in upcoming articles. Keep following us on our Facebook and Twitter when we finish mourning and find our own special way to honor the legend.
Hail to the Goblin King.
