Everything We Know So Far About The Doctor’s New Companion

Fans of the iconic BBC series Doctor Who are yearning for a trip through time and space right about now, as show teases like the Christmas special and the latest season trailer have us begging for a visit from a certain TARDIS.

The 10th season is set to premiere in April of this year, and will feature the last episodes spearheaded by longtime showrunner, Steven Moffat, the return of Peter Capaldi as the 12th reincarnation of The Doctor, and a fresh-faced companion played by actress Pearl Mackie.

Details about Bill Potts and her life before her time on the TARDIS have been slim since the announcement of her character what seems like ages ago, but luckily the new trailer shines a bit of light on The Doctor’s newest companion.

She works in a university cafeteria

Bill states in the latest trailer that she serves chips for a living, and that she meets The Doctor during his time as a university professor in Bristol. That’s right, a real world job.

When on board the TARDIS for presumably the very firs time, Bill exclaims that that the TARDIS reminds her of a kitchen. Pointing to the fact that she either spends much of her time in the kitchen for work, loves to cook so much that it’s always on her mind, or both.

Her story line is modern

We’ve seen characters join The Doctor’s adventures from various points in history, and though speculation arose regarding Bill’s entrance, Moffat made it clear that Bill is indeed a modern character, sharing with Doctor Who Magazine, “She’s from now, yeah. I know there are rumours about her being from the 1980s, but she isn’t.” And, in response to her very retro fashion sense, “She’s just wearing what young people are wearing now,” Moffat said. “I know that, because Pearl chose her outfit herself.”

She’s sassy, and full of curiosity

This companion is full of questions, and rightfully so, since we’re to understand that unlike Clara, Bill is completely new to The Doctor and his time-traveling adventures. There’s so much to take in and understand when it comes to time and space travel, let alone the fact that The Doctor is so quirky on his own.

For fans, it’s great to see Bill so upfront about her curiosity. The show’s audience wants to know so much more about the character, and seeing her ability to keep up with The Doctor intellectually is satisfying. “Bill is someone who asks the questions that nobody has asked for 53 years. [She has the] irreverence and cheek to ask all the questions you’re not supposed to ask on Doctor Who,” Moffat told DWM.

Pearl’s not afraid of action

Back when Mackie was first announced as a new member of the Doctor Who team, she spoke to BBC about being excited to put her character into action, “I always loved stage combat at drama school so I can’t wait to get on set and kick some evil monsters into the next dimension!”
