Doctor Who is FINALLY returning to our televisions on Saturday. After such a long hiatus and the is she staying or is she leaving? emotional roller coaster Jenna Coleman put us all through during the Christmas special (I don’t want to talk about her post-season 9 plans), it will be awesome to see the Doctor and his companion in the TARDIS once again. Of course, when you’re welcoming back your favorite time travelers, you can’t just throw any old premiere watch party. While pizza and beer is always a great option for watch parties, you’ve got to get a bit fancier when you’re welcoming a Time Lord back to TV. Still, throwing together a snazzy, Instagram-worthy party can be tough. Have no fear though. To help get your party planner juices flowing, here are a few ideas that are easy, creative, and wholly Whovian for party snacks worthy of Gallifrey. Allons-y!
Tea and Jammie Dodgers
Doctor Who is a British show, and nothing is more stereotypically British than tea. Pair that with one of the Doctor’s favorite cookies (or biscuits, if you want to really get your UK on), the jammie dodger, and you’re all set. For those who have no idea what a jammie dodger is, it’s essentially a shortbread cookie with a raspberry jam center. Yum!
If you are a cupcake-making champ, you can kick things up a notch to make your cupcakes Dalek-shaped, or even make a giant cupcake tree in the shape of a Dalek. Of course, for the rest of us baking mortals, keep it simply by making your cupcakes straight outta Skaro with Dalek toppers and cupcake holders.
The Fourth Doctor loved a nice jelly baby, which, for those who don’t know, are essentially fruit-flavored jelly treats inexplicably shaped like babies. While these can be a bit tougher to find in the US, you can cheat and set out any sort of gummy bear or gummy snack for your Whovian guests.
If your baking skills are slim to non-existent, or you simply don’t have the time to prep an elaborate watch party, this is the treat for you. With some black frosting, big marshmallows, small marshmallows, and tooth picks, you can create cute and easy Adipose treats for your party attendees.
Take a break from all of that sugar, and offer your guests a few chicken legs. You can go grilled, fried, or boiled (don’t do boiled–don’t be that guy), but it will be a welcomed respite from all the sugar you’ve got on the menu. Plus, you can use them to toss into the shadows at your party to check for Vashta Nerada. Extra points for repeating, “Hey, who turned out the lights?” as you eat.
If you’re not in the mood for chicken, you can offer a pasta dish–using bowtie pasta, of course. After all, bowties are cool. This is a great option for both the culinary wizards, and those who hardly know their way around a kitchen. You can keep it simple with pasta and sauce from a can, or serve your favorite, fancy pasta dish.
No watch party is complete without a few drinks! While you can keep it simple with soda and beer, think about stepping it up a notch by offering Sonic Screwdrivers. You can find lots of different Sonic Screwdriver cocktails online (like this mocktail from our own Critical Hit Cocktails with Mitch Hutts), or you can also keep it simple by making a traditional screwdriver, adding some TARDIS blue food coloring.
Adding these simple touches can kick your premiere party up a notch, without putting you at risk on setting anything on fire or a #PinterestFail-worthy dish. Of course, if you’re up for a culinary challenge, check out some of these advanced Whovian recipes over at Nerdist.
What kind of Whovian treats are you planning to serve while you watch the season 9 premiere? Let us know your plans in the comments, and of course, be sure to watch the Doctor Who this Saturday, September 19!
