Whovians have a lot to look forward to in the next twelve months. There’s a brand new series featuring the return of Twelfth Doctor, a new Christmas special (which is easily one of the highlights of holiday fandom), and the young-adult spinoff series Class which seems INCREDIBLY promising. And now on top of all that, thanks to the good folks at BBC Worldwide and Sanrio Global Who-fans of all ages can have a little more wibbly wobbly timey wimey fun come story time!
Announced last week, the partnership will see the publication of a number of story books done in the iconic Mr. Men & Little Miss style, stewarded by Adam Hargreaves, the son of the original Mr. Men author Roger Hargreaves. The project was initially spurred along by the phenomenon of fans creating mashups online across a number of platforms, and it was made clear to the powers that be that this idea had legs.
According to Sanrio licensing director Alastair McHarrie, “We wanted to give something back to these supporters so we’ve created the first official Hargreaves mash-up…who better to partner with than another classic British property, Doctor Who.” The books be published by Penguin Random House and will combine “the iconic storytelling of Doctor Who” with the Mr. Men’s “whimsical humour and design.”
Each 32-page book will focus on one of the Doctor’s many incarnations, with the first four coming out in the Spring of 2017: Dr. First, Dr. Fourth, Dr. Eleventh, and Dr. Twelfth. There are plans for books based on the remaining eight Doctors, as well as merchandising tie-ins as the series progresses. As with all things Who, the immediate fan response has been strong, but unfortunately, we’ll all have to wait until 2017 to see the real deals!
