Comic Scribe Warren Ellis Brings CASTLEVANIA Animated Series To Netflix

For over 30 years, the Belmont clan has hunted Dracula in the Castlevania video games series across multiple consoles. Now, Castlevania is finally getting a real adaptation in the form of an animated series heading to Netflix later this year.

Netflix buried the Castlevania news in a press release, but producer Adi Shankar confirmed the report on his facebook page by saying “Castlevania is a Netflix Original Series with Season 1 launching in 2017 and Season 2 in 2018. Furthermore, I personally guarantee that it will end the streak and be the western world’s first good video game adaptation.” He added that “Seasons 1 & 2 were written by Warren f’ing Ellis.”

Ellis is one of the most popular creators in comics and he’s well known for writing Transmetropolitan, NextWave, and the “Extremis” storyline that inspired Iron Man 3. Ellis’ previous comic books also demonstrate why he’s a good fit for Castlevania, as he brought widescreen style action to comics in The Authority and explored literary characters, pulp heroes, and comic book tropes in the critically acclaimed Planetary series. More intriguingly, this will be Ellis’ second attempt to create an animated Castlevania epic. Via Bleeding Cool, Ellis was once contracted to adapt the storyline of Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse as an animated feature, but the project never came to fruition.

The Castlevania animated series appears to be a completely new story that will follow “the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepe himself.” Frederator Studios is providing the animation, and Ellis wrote every episode of the first and second seasons. However, the early reports indicate that the first season will consist of only four 30-minute episodes in the fourth quarter of 2017, with the second season to follow one year later.
