Bake Scanlan’s Spice Cookies for Some Holiday Inspiration

“Do you spice?” – Scanlan Shorthalt, The Streets of Ank’Harel

Their quest for the Vestiges of Divergence lead Vox Machina to Marquet, a part of Exandria that the group had never ventured to before. Before they leave, their ally Jarret Howarth asks the adventurers to bring him back some spice, called fusaka, from his hometown of Ank’Harel.

Scanlan Shorthalt, gnome bard and good friend, takes this request very seriously, and never forgets it for a second during the group’s journey to the mystical city of Ank’Harel. But he may have gotten the wrong idea…

These Critical Role-inspired cookies don’t actually contain fusaka, but the nutmeg and cinnamon treats are perfect for the holidays or anytime you need some inspiration.

Scanlan’s Spice Cookies

1 egg
1 cup unsalted butter, softened
1 cup brown sugar
4 tablespoons molasses
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
2-1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
2-1/4 cups flour
1/2 cup sugar

Preheat the oven to 375°.

Use a mixer to cream together the egg, butter, brown sugar, and molasses in a large bowl.

In another large bowl, sift together flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, baking soda, and salt.

Mix in three equal parts of the dry ingredients into the brown sugar mixture until well blended.

Pour the sugar into a small bowl.

Form the dough into one-inch balls and roll into sugar. Place about two inches apart on an ungreased cookie sheet.

Bake for approximately 10-12 minutes.

What would you make with fusaka? Let us know in the comments!
