Art Displays your Favorite Characters Unmasked

Warning! Prepare your eyes for something unexpected. No, you aren’t sleep deprived. Your favorite characters may appear slightly different than you remember in this new set of illustrations.

These images are the work of artist Alex Solis, who had an interesting question about the pop culture we experience daily and is ingrained in our lives. When we see a new character in movies, TV, comics, or books, do you sometimes feel as if you’ve met them before? Is this because they remind us of someone or something familiar? Or perhaps there’s another reason. Solis suggests one possible explanation–that this feeling is “our minds piecing together past experiences to create something that feels unique and new.”

In his series “Icons Unmasked,” Solis explores these thoughts seeking to “recreate the experience of what it might be like to see one iconic character from your childhood for the first time as an adult.” Not only will you see these characters “unmasked,” but take a moment to think deeper than the obvious upon viewing. Are the two characters obviously similar or is there something else that connects them? Take a look at two below. Then check out the gallery of even more.
