IMAX announced that starting tomorrow, October 13th, select theaters will be showing the original Harry Potter film series in anticipation of the IMAX showings of Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them beginning on November 18th. We’ve seen these movies a million times, of course, but there’s nothing quite like seeing a film on the big (and we mean big) screen. We’ve included some of our favorite moments below that we think will look amazing on an IMAX screen.
The Battle of Hogwarts
It seems a little strange to start with something so climactic, but we’re all among fans here. There are a good handful of moments that are worth the price of admission, from the hundreds of wands throwing magic bolts to the destruction of the wooden bridge. Hogwarts is as much of a character in the story as anyone else and watching the school get blown apart is an emotional moment for any fan.
The Yule Ball
Much of Harry Potter is an exploration of the fantastic and shadowy world of wizarding but this scene catches the chills and thrills of that first big dance at school. It’s full of intrigue, drama, romance, and heartbreak even before the overarching plot sneaks in.
This isn’t one particular moment so much as it it an opportunity to see the sport on a big screen just like any other sportsball event on a weekend. The games got more dynamic and dramatic as the series moved on but even the early scenes have some great moments ready to be magnified.
Dumbledore vs. Voldemort
There are a lot of great duels in the Harry Potter films, but this one always has fans drooling. It’s the Obi-Wan vs. Darth Vader duel, if we can mix fandoms for a moment. Most of the duels up to this point have been fought between wizards still learning spells and growing into their power. This duel features two wizards at the top of their game throwing down, which looks stunning on a giant IMAX screen.
The Story of the Deathly Hallows
When it was first announced that the last book was going to be split into two films, some fans were upset that the Harry Potter films were just following a trend of other book adaptations padding out their films, but the extra running time allowed filmmakers to turn The Tale of the Three Brothers into an animated short. It’s a gorgeous way to tell this very important tale and seeing it on a big screen will likely reveal details that are hard to notice watching it on a phone.
Hermione Decks Draco
So it might not have a ton of CGI, or be a vital story point, but let’s be real: is there any more satisfying moment in the whole series that watching Malfoy getting jacked in the face?
