5 Football-Themed TV Episodes to Watch Instead of the Superbowl

The sport of football permeates American culture and our favorite TV shows are no exception. With the biggest football day of the year just around the corner, here are a few episodes of TV shows that pay homage to our love of the game. If you’re looking for a few ways to celebrate not watching the big game, this is your chance! Here are a few football-themed TV episodes to get you in that football spirit.

How I Met Your Mother “Monday Night Football” Season 2, Episode 14

When the gang has to attend a funeral at the bar instead of watching the Superbowl, they agree to continue their tradition of watching it together the following Monday night. The only problem is trying to avoid being spoiled leading up to their big game. Ted creates sensory deprivation goggles, Barney handcuffs himself to the wall, Robin avoids reporting on the game at work, and Marshall and Lily bribe children to keep quiet. We could probably institute these same strategies for avoiding Game of Thrones spoilers.

The Big Bang Theory “The Cornhusker Vortex” Season 3, Episode 6

Leonard is afraid Penny is embarrassed to have him meet her friends and feels left while they watch football together. So, she invites him to watch the game with her friends the following week. Leonard begins studying up on football until Sheldon offers to teach him all of the technical rules of football. On the day of the Nebraska game, Sheldon sits at home making Cylon toast while Leonard attempts to fit in with the football fans. Ultimately, Leonard realizes he’d rather just hang out with Sheldon.

Bones “The Carpals in the Coy-Wolves” Season 11, Episode 4

Betty White joins the team as a brilliant scientist and fantasy football expert after a real estate mogul is found dead in the woods. Turns out, the victim’s fantasy football participation may be tied to his murder. He had Twitter feuds with NFL players and gambling debts with the league to settle. So basically, he had a lot of enemies. It’s pretty fun to watch Betty While talk football stats and just be generally hilarious while they search for clues.

Veronica Mars “Wichita Linebacker” Season 3, Episode 3

When a college football player’s playbook is stolen, leaving him the possibility of getting kicked off the team, he hires Veronica to solve the case. As she searches for the playbook, she discovers a student betting on the game gave the playbook to the opposing team. Plus, the playbook wasn’t exactly stolen for nefarious reasons in the first place. It’s not a cut and dry case but if anyone can solve this football mystery, it’s Veronica Mars!

Friends “The One With The Football” Season 3, Episode 9

After watching football on TV, the gang decides to play a game of their own. Of course, Ross and Monica turn the whole thing into an intense competition. Rachel is unathletic, Joey and Chandler get distracted trying to impress a woman sitting in the park, and Phoebe just wants to have fun. Ultimately, Ross and Monica end up wrestling in the park over the football while everyone else leaves.

Even if football doesn’t interest you, the use of the sport on our favorite TV shows can be pretty hilarious. So check out the episodes above, or if you’re feeling particularly ambitious, just start binge-watching Friday Night Lights!
